Mountain Street Renovation

Inspiration for this renovation project stems from the homeowner's South African roots and a love for surfing. The bones of the house are reminiscent of a mountain house--it's perched high on a hill with A-frame architecture, but instead of mountain views, the clients basque in views of the ocean, Sandy Hook and the Twin Lights. We channeled a more industrial, contemporary style, influenced by South African and Australian design, and we transformed this part of the home into a mountain surf lodge.

At the initial design stages, the homeowners were a bit overwhelmed by the conflicting hard elements throughout the
house--such as parquet wood flooring, wood paneled ceilings, modern stone veneer accent walls, and brick fireplaces.
It was essential to approach the designs with the long-term vision in mind: how can we hone in on the original architecture
to finetune the essence, flow and function of the home?

We emphasized natural materials and introduced a variety of wood tones throughout the space to add depth and
warmth. With sweeping views and an abundance of natural light, the setting itself brings a quiet sense of calm that needed little enhancement.
